Attorney litigation support
Witness location, records, scene work, and field investigation directed by civil or defense counsel.
What it is
Litigation support is investigator work done for a lawyer who has a Texas case to try or to settle. It includes locating witnesses, serving papers, photographing a scene, pulling records, running backgrounds, and discreet surveillance when the pleadings need facts. We do not practice law. We do not stand in for counsel at a deposition. We take direction on scope, privilege, and what may be shared with the other side. The file is built so the attorney can use it, not so it looks dramatic in a meeting.
How J.I.S handles it in Texas
Counsel emails or calls the Helotes office. We confirm the caption, the county, the deadline, and whether the work is for plaintiff, defense, or a business client sitting behind the lawyer. Field staff work the county where the witness, the scene, or the subject actually is. Criminal defense and civil files both come in; we will not take a side that conflicts with a file we already have. Privilege and work-product questions stay with the attorney. We report to the lawyer unless the lawyer tells us to copy the client. License A24038101 is on the engagement.
What the client receives
The attorney receives a written report, media, and the raw notes that support it, delivered through the Client Portal or the channel counsel prefers. Deadlines are on the first page. If a witness will not talk, we document the attempt. If a scene has changed, we photograph what is left and say what we could not capture. Invoices match the scope letter. The client who is paying can have portal access when the attorney agrees.
Who uses it
Texas civil litigators, criminal-defense counsel, and in-house lawyers use J.I.S when they need a licensed investigator instead of a staffer with a phone. Insurance defense files often sit in this same bucket. Businesses come through their attorney when a contract fight, a theft, or a workplace claim needs fieldwork. If you do not have a lawyer yet, you can still start a case assignment; we will tell you when the next step is counsel, not more investigation.
Questions we hear
- Do I have to be an attorney to hire you?
- No. Private clients and businesses hire us directly. When a case is already in suit, we prefer to take direction from the lawyer so privilege and deadlines stay clean.
- Can you work a criminal defense file?
- Yes. Independent field work for defense counsel is part of the practice. We are not a substitute for the lawyer and we will not give the defendant legal advice.
- How do you handle privilege?
- We take the attorney’s instruction on who may see the file. Reports are written as work product when that is the engagement. Your lawyer should say so at the start.
