Locates / skip tracing
Find a person — or a vehicle — last tied to Texas, then put a usable address or a next step on the file.
What it is
Skip tracing is the search for someone who has moved, dropped a phone, or stopped answering the people who need them. Locates also cover vehicles last known in Texas when recovery or documentation is the next step. The work starts with the identifiers you already have: a name, a last city, a plate, a relative, a workplace. Databases, records, and field confirmation are tools, not magic. A locate is a current, usable lead — not a promise that the person will stay put. If the trail is cold, we say how cold it is.
How J.I.S handles it in Texas
We start with Texas ties because that is where our license and our field staff live. Houston, Dallas–Fort Worth, San Antonio, El Paso, the Valley, and the smaller counties are one practice, not a list of other agencies. If the last good address is in Helotes or four hundred miles away, the same desk runs the search. We do not cold-call the subject to announce a lawsuit unless the assignment is service of process and the law allows contact. Witness locates for counsel are handled as litigation support. Vehicle locates stay inside what a Texas PI may do; we are not a repo company.
What the client receives
You receive the best current location we can support, the records that got us there, and a note on confidence. If we confirm a door, that confirmation is in the file. If we only have a lead that still needs a knock, we label it that way. Updates go in the Client Portal. When a locate turns into surveillance, service, or a background check, we do not make you start over with a new firm. If we cannot find the person, you still get a written account of what we tried.
Who uses it
Attorneys need witnesses and parties who have left the last address on the pleading. Families need a relative who stopped calling. Businesses and insurers need a claimant, a former employee, or a vehicle. Private clients need someone last seen in Texas before they decide what to do next. If you already have a process server’s affidavit that came back unserved, a locate is often the missing step.
Questions we hear
- Can you find anyone?
- No honest investigator promises that. People who never had a Texas footprint, who left the country, or who left almost no identifiers are harder. We tell you what the starting facts will support before you retain the search.
- Do you locate vehicles too?
- Yes, when the vehicle was last tied to Texas and the purpose is lawful. We document what we find. Recovery itself is a different kind of assignment and may require other licensed work.
- Will you contact the person?
- Only if the assignment calls for it and the law allows it. Many locates stop at a confirmed address so counsel or the client can decide the next step.
